Face detection is one of the great technologies that is used a lot today. Like in security, photography, marketing and much more environments.
This blog will talk about this powerful tool, how it works and explain more about its uses in augmented reality.

What is face detection?:

Face detection is AI (artificial intelligence based) computer technology that is used to get and identify people’s faces from images or videos. Face detection applications use machine learning and algorithms to detect human faces within images. These images and videos can contain numerous objects that aren’t faces such as cars, trees, buildings and parts of humans like hands or legs.

Face detection is able to identify that if there is a human face present in an image or video.

How does face detection work?

Facial detection usually starts by seeking the human eyes, which are one of the easiest facial features to detect. Next, the algorithm might try to find the mouth, nose, eyebrows, and iris. After getting these facial features, the algorithm concludes that it is actually a face.
To make algorithms as accurate as possible, they must be trained with hundreds of thousands of images. Some of these images contain faces, while others do not.
The training helps the algorithm’s ability to decide whether an image contains faces, and where those facial regions are located.

Face Detection and AR:

  • Filters:
Like in Snapchat or Instagram, with face detection it’s possible to add masks or visual effects using augmented reality to create funny videos or pictures!
  • Security:
Nowadays, most of the recent mobile phones have face detection as a password. A better way to make this device more secure.
  • Shopping:
This awesome tool allows people to make payments with their faces without the need to carry a physical wallet.

The future is here!
